Jewell Praying Wolf James is a Lummi tribal member and director of the Lummi Nation’s Sovereignty and Treaty Protection Office. He has a long history of involvement in local, regional, national and international Native rights. He served on the Lummi Indian Business Council and was director of the Lummi Fisheries Department. The subject of numerous documentaries, he is a Master Carver who carved and helped transport totem poles to each of the 9/11 sites to help bring healing to the American Nation. In 2011 he carved and transported a totem pole to the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland, to inaugurate the National Institute of Health exhibit “Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness.”
